Course Description:
HI !!!!! Welcome to introductory biology. I hope that your ready to learn some new
and interesting things. We will be exploring many different areas of biology in this class
and trying to figure out explanations for some of the worlds greatest phenomena. As long
as you do your part I am going to try to make this year as fun and enjoyable as possible. I really
look forward to working with you. The rest of this syllabus will go over some class rules and the
grading scheme.
A little about me first:
I graduated from East Providence High School and went to URI. I really enjoy working with
kids like you. I like sports, especially football and baseball (GO YANKS!). Science has always been
a passion of mine and like to enjoy nature and birdwatch. If any student is interested about doing some
birding let me know.
Grades:
We will have a test at the end of every other chapter we cover, so we will have a total of five tests:
- This will account for 50% of your grade.
You will have homework usually weekly but sometimes more:
- Your homework grade will be equal to one test grade or 10 %
Then there will be a term paper and project:
- Each will be worth 10% a piece
You will have labs and in class work which will account for the last 20 % of your grade:
- This could include but is not limited to:
Quizzes
In class lab reports
In class assignments
Group work
Class discussions
Class Rules:
1.) There must be respect for every point of view in this classroom. No student should feel as though they can't talk because of fear or ridicule.*
2.) In order to be sure that all points are heard and all questions are answered only one person should be talking at a time. Raise your hand and wait to be picked on before speaking. I will listen to you without interrupting so please show me the same respect.*
3.) All lab rules must be followed in order to keep you and others safe. Failure to follow these rules will lead to you being taken out of lab and receiving a failing grade on that assignment.
4.) All homework must be brought in on time. If an assignment is late it will loose five points everyday it is late and if it is more than three class periods late it will not be accepted.
*Not following these rules will lead to detention. More than three infractions will force me to involve the principal.
Lab Safety Rules:
1.) Follow the directions given in the lab and do not attempt to do the lab without first reading the directions.
2.) If at anytime you are injured or feel sick tell me.
3.) If something breaks or something is spilled tell the me right away and I will either instruct you to clean it up or if its necessary I will clean it up.
4.) There is a sharps container that all broken glass must be put in. No broken glass can be put into the trash.
5.) If we use any chemicals they must be put into a waste container I will point out at the beginning of the lab. NEVER PUT THEM DOWN THE DRAIN!
6.) No loose clothing can be worn during lab and proper protection must be worn. (For example, goggles must be worn if we are using chemicals and gloves must be worn if we are dissecting.)
7.) At the end of every lab make sure that your station is clean. Wipe it down and make sure there is no trash or papers let behind. Make sure that all equipment is returned to me and accounted for before leaving.
LETS HAVE A GOOD YEAR AND HAVE SOME FUN ALONG WITH LEARNING A GREAT DEAL! GOODLUCK !!!!!!!!
